Picking Up Islam in Germany
Islam accommodates all the rights inherent in humans. Has a dynamic perspective. So that his teachings can survive in every age. As Abdurrahman Wahid Said “Islam is a very human religion. It’s just that extremists twist it”. The building of history will always change with the Islamic context it is. But not with the teachings of Islam itself. In reality, practice of Islam will be different in places. The difference just in the affairs of the branch that many islamic scholars have different opinions on the matter, not in the basic teachings of Islam.
Being Islamic Indonesia is an extraordinary gift, especially for a woman. Although Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world, this does not necessarily make the country discriminate. Islam is not necessarily a state ideology or a constitution. Indonesia has come to the maturity of thinking by accepting Pancasila as the foundation of common life.
Islamic law in Indonesia is not the same as Islamic law in Arabia. Indonesian Islamic society is very flexible in applying Islamic law. The tolerant and cooperative attitude of Islam towards Indonesian culture is considered as the success of Islam in the land of Nusantara. Indonesian scholars and scholars are known for their open and tolerant thinking. Like Nur Kholis Majid and Abdurrahman Wahid.
May I say Muslimah Indonesia is the luckiest Muslim in the world. At the same time, Muslim world faced big problems that may not be much realized Muslim Indonesia. In the eastern world Muslim women are faced with a great wall of patriarchal culture that robs all of their rights and freedoms. In the western world women become easy targets of racist groups infected with xenophobic and islamphobic diseases. Hijab as a religious symbol is considered dangerous and disturbs general stability. In Indonesia, muslim women will be easy to express their will. Wearing hijab or not, wearing pants, riding a bicycle, singing, dancing, performing in public, being a leader, being a judge, going to school, working, going out, even suing a husband’s divorce are women’s full right. Although in fact many red records, at least the condition of Muslimah Indonesia better than others.
The large number of Muslims does not actually make Islam in Indonesia free from problems and challenges. Precisely this great potential, if not managed properly will cause disease for the survival of this nation. Textual, Intolerant, radical and extreme Islamic understanding is harmful to Islam and others. Cases in Indonesia show that Muslims themselves are the perpetrators of violence and violations of religious freedom. Such as: the prohibition of places of worship, expulsion, assault, arson, disbelievers, terrorism and suicide bombings.
In everyday life, being a Muslim in Indonesia is not a difficult thing. We will never find it difficult to find halal food, or simply perform solat. Everything we need to practice the teachings of Islam will be easily obtained. It’s different with Muslim in German. As a minority group, German Muslims have difficulty in carrying out religious orders or simply socializing and interacting with the surrounding environment. This does not include all acts of racism and discrimination committed by the citizens of Germany. I understand that Islam in Germany and in the West is generally underestimated. This can not be separated from the rising of Islamophobia and xenophobia in the west.
Regardless of the problem that convulsed Muslims in Germany, for me Germany is still interesting. Germany and all the great things about it are all I can imagine. Its name is always called in the great history of the world, the progress and sophistication of technology is a charming allure. I consider Germany to be one of the Islamic countries. Remember, Islamic state is not an Islamic country.
Why is that? I am reminded of Prof Noor Haidi’s remark that the Islamic state is a country capable of guaranteeing the rights of its citizens, capable of realizing social welfare and justice. I am very proud and touched by the gracious government policy of receiving millions of refugees who are thirsty for protection. Although his actions are also protested by the citizens. Germany is more humane and Islamic than Arabs, Bahrainis and Qatar who claim to be an Islamic state but do not treat fellow believers as human beings even dragged into the vortex of endless humanitarian conflict.
A program live in with Muslims in Germany is a golden opportunity that should not be ignored. Even if I have limitations and shortcomings, I should try it. Interacting with Muslims in Germany will directly enrich my knowledge and experience. There will be many things I can get from those I do not see in Indonesia.
I want to see Islam from another glass. Not only Islam Indonesia, Islam Majority, East Islam. Not always Islam in books or yellow books. But the real Islam, Islam of Germany, Western Islam. I would like to share with people around my life about the knowledge and experience of the various kinds of Islam that exist in this world. Unlocking the eyes and mind is important to realize cosmopolitan Islam, an active Islam in the association of the world without losing its identity. Picking up Islam in Germany is an important thing to do for reflection in living and practicing the teachings of Islam. And this is my great hope to follow this program. I look forward to being accepted into this gold program.
Various ways I can do to share experiences „Picking up Islam in Germany“. Various creative ways we can do to convey information that we have become interesting and fun. Like making videos, infographics or even documentation that we can easily do. In addition I can write my travels digging up knowledge and experience in Germany. I publish in Islamic media that is tolerant and open. And the last I will share my experience with the presentation in front of the community that I follow as Islamic boarding school and community of Gus Dur Jogja Santri.
